What you'll be doing

In this role, you will lead the IET’s Journals and Conference Proceedings publishing programme, fostering growth, innovation, and excellence in the rapidly evolving research publishing landscape. Your responsibilities will include overseeing the development of our peer-reviewed open access journals, building strategic relationships with journal partners and stakeholders, and ensuring our publications meet the highest standards of research integrity, impact, and quality.

You will develop and implement a growth strategy, identifying new opportunities for acquisition, co-publication, and portfolio expansion. This will include actively engaging with global research communities to ensure our journals remain at the forefront of scientific and technical publishing. Collaborating closely with internal teams across production, marketing, and sales, you will ensure efficient operations and broad market reach.

Managing a high-performing team, you’ll foster a collaborative and innovative culture, setting clear performance expectations and supporting professional development. You’ll provide regular reporting on strategic and operational KPIs, offering insights that shape decision-making and support organisational objectives.

Representing the IET at industry events, you’ll establish and maintain partnerships with societies, scholarly publishing networks, and funding bodies, advancing our mission to provide cutting-edge publishing solutions to the academic and professional communities we serve.

A little more about the role

  • Develop and manage the Journals and Conference Proceedings team, fostering a culture of collaboration and high performance.
  • Oversee the development and growth of the IET’s peer-reviewed open access journals, ensuring alignment with organisational strategy.
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with journal partners, co-owners, and external stakeholders, ensuring strategic alignment and growth.
  • Support innovation by identifying new journal opportunities, markets, and co-publication opportunities to expand the portfolio.
  • Ensure high editorial and research integrity standards, focusing on peer review, impact metrics, and article quality.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to optimise processes across production, marketing, and sales.
  • Track and report on strategic and operational KPIs, using data insights to inform decision-making and drive performance.
  • Manage financial reporting for the programme, ensuring alignment with budgetary goals and financial accountability.
  • Represent the IET at global industry events, building networks and exploring opportunities for expansion and partnerships.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, including open science, funding models, and research information needs, to shape the future of the IET’s journals programme.

A little more about what we’re looking for

  • Proven experience managing and growing STM journal publishing programmes, including leading editorial teams.
  • Good understanding of open-access publishing, open science initiatives, and research integrity principles.
  • Strong knowledge of publishing standards, peer review processes, and editorial systems such as ScholarOne or Research Exchange.
  • Commercial acumen with a track record of identifying market opportunities and driving portfolio growth.
  • Experience tracking KPIs and using data to improve operational efficiency.
  • Excellent management skills, with the ability to inspire, develop, and manage a high-performing team.
  • Proven relationship-building skills with partners, societies, and stakeholders in the academic and publishing sectors.
  • Strong communication and decision-making abilities, thriving in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Familiarity with emerging trends in scholarly publishing, including FAIR data principles and preprint policies.
  • Flexibility to travel internationally to represent the IET and support global publishing initiatives.

 

What we hope you can bring to the role

We are looking for an experienced publishing professional with a proven track record of managing and growing a scientific, technical, and medical (STM) journals programme. You will have in-depth knowledge of open-access publishing models, research integrity principles, and editorial best practices, as well as hands-on experience with editorial systems such as ScholarOne or Research Exchange.

Your strategic thinking and commercial acumen will enable you to identify market opportunities, develop innovative products, and deliver portfolio growth. Strong analytical skills and a data-driven mindset will help you track key metrics and implement strategies to optimise operational efficiency and impact.

As a manager, you will inspire and develop a high-performing team, setting goals and fostering a collaborative environment. You will excel at building and maintaining relationships, engaging effectively with journal partners, societies, and funding bodies to advance the IET’s publishing programme.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to make informed decisions in a dynamic environment. Experience in open science initiatives, preprints, or data-sharing policies would be advantageous, and you should be ready to travel as needed to represent the IET globally.
