What you'll be doing

As a key member of our Technical Regulations team, you’ll play a crucial role in shaping the future of electrical installation safety in the UK. You will support the development of BS 7671 (The IET Wiring Regulations) by managing and coordinating the activities of technical committees, both nationally and internationally. This includes organising meetings, preparing agendas, taking minutes, and ensuring that agreed actions are completed. You’ll represent the IET on global standards committees, providing expert input to influence the development of regulations.

In addition, you will draft and revise technical papers, contribute to the maintenance and creation of IET publications, and provide guidance on BS 7671 to a wide range of stakeholders. You’ll also attend industry events, present seminars, and share your expertise through public speaking engagements and media requests. As part of this role, you will have the opportunity to write articles for our magazine, Wiring Matters, and collaborate with key figures in the electrical industry.

A little more about the role

  • Support the development and updating of BS 7671 (The IET Wiring Regulations) and associated publications.
  • Manage and coordinate national and international technical committees, including organising meetings, preparing agendas, and taking minutes.
  • Represent the IET and the UK on standards committees at global and European levels.
  • Draft, review, and revise technical papers, guidance documents, and regulatory updates.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on BS 7671 to IET members, industry stakeholders, and the public.
  • Attend and present at industry events, seminars, and technical workshops across the UK.
  • Write articles for the Wiring Matters magazine and contribute to media publications where needed.
  • Engage in public speaking, responding to media requests and representing the IET in external forums.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of IET publications and help explore new business opportunities.
  • Collaborate with team members and technical representatives to ensure the highest standards of regulatory compliance.
  • Extensive experience as an electrical engineer with in-depth knowledge of electrical installation practices in the UK.
  • Strong working knowledge of BS 7671 and its amendments, including related legislation and industry guidance.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with experience managing meetings, committees, and complex projects.
  • First-rate communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to liaise with senior industry figures.
  • Ability to draft and interpret technical papers, regulations, and guidance documents.
  • Experience in public speaking, delivering presentations, and responding to media enquiries.
  • Proficiency in IT, particularly MS Word, and strong attention to detail in technical documentation.
  • Self-motivated, capable of working independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Experience working with standards bodies such as BSI, CENELEC, and IEC is desirable.
  • A professional, proactive approach with a passion for maintaining high safety standards in the industry.
  • Ideally degree-education in electrical engineering or a similar field.

Please note both national travel (circa twice a month) and international travel (circa twice per year) should be expected.

Additionally, please note the internal role title is Senior Engineer.


 

What we hope you can bring to the role

We’re looking for an experienced electrical engineer with a deep understanding of electrical installation practices in the UK, ideally qualified to Incorporated Engineer level. You’ll have a strong working knowledge of BS 7671 and associated legislation, with the ability to draft technical papers, guidance, and provide expert interpretation.

Excellent communication skills are essential, as you’ll be working closely with senior industry representatives, technical committees, and external stakeholders. You’ll need to be highly organised, capable of managing a variety of tasks and projects, and comfortable representing the IET on both national and international stages.

Public speaking or lecturing experience would be an asset, along with an understanding of the publishing process and the role of standards bodies like BSI, CENELEC, and IEC. Above all, we’re seeking a collaborative, detail-oriented professional with a passion for ensuring the highest standards in electrical safety.
